Goethe's Color Relationships
Let’s look more closely at the color wheel of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and consider the qualities he describes in the colors. We will identify the different contrasts within the color wheel.

Painting Techniques 2
Two painting demonstrations include Using a Sponge as a Painting Tool and Creating a Blend.
-
Label your Color Wheel
Follow the demonstration to label your Color Wheel to show the color relationships.
-
Playing with Contrasts
In a series of painting you will now paint two colors together and learn more about their qualities when they “play” with each other on the paper.
-
A Color Study
To see how your chosen color responds in different circumstances, you will create a color study of that color by painting three separate paintings.
-
-
Day Three: Creative Compositions and Color Stories
-
Goethe's Color Insights and Colorations
Goethe’s study of colors went beyond color qualities and contrasts. We will discuss some of his other experimentation and discover “physiological colors” and “colorations”. I will also introduce the terminology you can use to talk about color and how it can support your understanding of color interactions.
-
Painting Techniques 3
Techniques of painting control must be counterbalanced with techniques allowing for freedom. This video demonstrates Color Flooding.
-
Writing Color Stories
Give your colors a voice and let them talk about their interactions with other colors. Learn how to write a color story that both describes to others how your painting was made and introduces the qualities of each color.
-
Your Color Conversations Masterpiece
Taking all you have learned so far, you will create a painting of your own design, using three colors.
-
Writing Color Stories 2
Using your Masterpiece as your inspiration, you are asked to write a story about the color interactions that you experienced while painting.
